Course Description

This course will explore the principles of various approaches to mental health, and the various treatment and therapies that can develop from these approaches. Topics covered within the course include biological, psychological and social models of mental health, as well as various mental health conditions, their aetiologies and approaches to treatment.

Through a series of lectures, students will learn how different theoretical frameworks have shaped various perspectives on mental health. Students will engage with a wide range of literature to assess the strengths and limitations of these approaches to mental health and considering their implications for treatment and intervention. The course evaluates the role of evidence-based practice in modern mental health care and encourages students to construct analyses informed by research.

By the end of the course, students will be able to analyse the contributions of major psychological, social, and biological perspectives, evaluate treatment approaches, and synthesise evidence from diverse sources to develop critical evaluations into mental health.
