The course will analyse a political phenomenon which is growing across Europe. It will cover political parties as well as extra-parliamentary movements and online activities. Key concepts such as fascism, racism and populism will be covered, as well as voting patterns, ideologies, campaign strategies and theoretical approaches. The course will be beneficial to future study and work in a wide range of areas and contexts, with relevance to integration, internationalisation and social cohesion.

The Far Right in Europe has grown in significance in recent decades. In part this growth has not been restricted to electoral support, but has also been noticeable in terms of legitimacy as well as direct and indirect political influence. In addition, other ways of influencing the political climate and discourse have become increasingly evident in the Far Fight agenda and activities. The course will provide an in-depth understanding of these developments. It will examine a wide range of far right parties, movements and groups, their ideology, their strategies, their impact, the reasons for their success and any possible links between the contemporary Far Right and traditional fascism and Nazism. Key controversial concepts, such as racism, extremism and populism will be scrutinised. The course will provide in-depth country-by-country coverage as well as broadly comparative and conceptual themes.
