Course Description

This course is structured around Francophone, German-language and Spanish-language case studies and focuses on the ways that writers, filmmakers, and artists have responded to specific political events at different points in time. Attention will be focused on cultural production arising in response to diverse protest movements, war and conflict, societal and climate change. Case studies explored in seminars will include, for example, literature and film dealing with the resurfacing of the Nazi legacy in Austria in the late 1980s, cultural activism against crime and violence in Mexico, and interventions in debates on immigration by artists of North African origin in France
