EG505Q: BIOREFINERY FOR SUSTAINABILITY (2026-2027)

Last modified: 31 Jul 2025 12:46

Course Overview

To provide students with an understanding of the concepts, characteristics and features of common process to convert organic wastes, such as biomass and carbon dioxide, into chemicals and valuable products using sustainable processes and to allow them to develop the skills necessary to model, analyse and design such systems.

Course Description

The course covers chemical conversions that use biomass or biomass-derived waste and carbon dioxide as feedstock, as alternative to conventional refinery processes which are mainly based on fossil resources. The course includes production of biofuels, chemicals and materials using renewable and sustainable feedstocks, as well as the principals involved in the design of sustainable processes based on process intensification strategies, and it is based on concepts of chemical stoichiometry, reaction kinetics, mass and energy balances.
