Course Overview

This course engages select ethical topics of contemporary relevance, considering what it means to engage them by drawing on the disciplinary resources of Christian theological ethics. It aims to develop skills in finding appropriate ways of framing Christian ethical concerns, understanding core ethical questions, locating theological sources that illumine these questions, and formulating normative proposals. The course will consist of in-depth engagement with texts in theological ethics, primarily through the discussion of texts in a seminar format.

Course Description

The aim of this course is to teach students to deploy the frameworks of Christian ethics within the context of ethical topics of contemporary relevance. The course will help students consider more deeply the tools and techniques offered in the discipline of Christian theological ethics. Its focus will be topics that are contested today, around topics like race, political polarization, relations with disabled people and animals, family ethics and the ethics of church practices. The overall aim is to develop skills in finding appropriate ways of framing Christian ethical questions, understanding the core ethical questions, locating theological sources that illumine these questions, and formulating normative proposals. The course will consist of in-depth engagement with texts in theological ethics, primarily through the discussion of texts in a seminar format.
