This course supports students in the further development of therapeutic competence, by linking supervision and practice.  With a specific focus on working with clients who have complex problems this programme supports the development of advanced practitioners.

Course Description

This course explores the pluralistic framework for practice in relation to working with clients who are experiencing complex and longstanding difficulties. Students will engage in critical reflection on practice around such topics as: theoretical approaches for making sense of case complexity, establishing a therapeutic relationship with clients who have difficulties with trust, collaborative case formulation and treatment planning, resolving ruptures in the therapeutic alliance, communication and joint work with other agencies and practitioners from other disciplines, risk management, and therapist self-care.

5000 word case study focusing on a complex case.

Tutorials and activities supporting practice placement will develop elements of this case-study e.g. case-formulation, collaboration, interventions/methods used, process and outcome monitoring.  The client work will be the subject of independent and group supervision presentations and discussions where students share ideas and progress with peers and tutors, receiving feedback in critical discussion.  The case-study will be chosen from a number of different clients undertaking therapy with the student, and all elements of the case will be mapped on to the practice competencies required
