This course consists of a work placement of at least 20 days duration in a working context related to the field of environmental anthropology. Partner organisations will normally be based in northeast Scotland but could be based further afield, including in other countries. The placement will run in Term 3, but prospective students will be encouraged to start planning their placement much earlier. They will work with the course coordinator to contact organisations and begin developing project and work experience ideas during Term 2.
Possible organisations locally include the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, the Forestry Commission, NatureScot, the James Hutton Institute, Aberdeen City Council and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency. Work projects for students will be negotiated with these organisations. If a student is unable to arrange a placement by the start of Term 3, they can switch to the Dissertation in Environmental Anthropology.
Students will meet regularly with a supervisor within the Department of Anthropology to discuss their placement and its progress. They will write a report, which will form the basis of assessment. The report should reflect on what has been learned during the placement, will connect the experience with relevant themes and literature explored on the programme, and will examine the relationship between the specific work context and environmental anthropology.
Information on contact teaching time is available from the course guide.
