Course Overview

Today, the profound influence of novel immunotherapies to treat cancers, autoimmune disease, infection and even to maintain transplant survival strategies means that a good understanding of basic immunology is valuable in many aspects of Biomedical Science. This course provides background knowledge of the innate and adaptive immune system and how that understanding is being used in a range of disease scenarios to provide new therapeutic options for patients.

Course Description

The aim of this course is to provide an understanding of the different aspects of immunology as related to infection and disease which can be applied to develop immunotherapy. Main areas of study will include: cellular functions of myeloid and lymphoid cell types and immune effector mechanisms, how the innate and adaptive immune systems are linked and how immune regulation maintains homeostasis. 

Practical sessions spread over 3 days will allow development and practice of generic laboratory skills as well as team working which is essential for future employment. The associated assessment will provide the opportunity to gain skills in critical analysis and evaluation of results, their presentation and the creation of a report.
