This course develops a theoretical and practical understanding of the use of modelling and simulation in the transport sector. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of transport models, including travel demand models of trip generation, trip distribution, mode choice, and traffic assignment, along with the data handling practices necessary to allow their application. The overall aim is to develop an understanding of approaches to modelling the likely outcomes of transport engineering, planning and policy decisions.

Modelling and simulation are core techniques used in the process of transport planning, engineering, and policy decision making. They allow us to represent the current transport network and explore the likely effects of planned or potential interventions. In this course, students will first be introduced to the theoretical underpinnings of modelling and simulation in order to form a basis from which to explore more applied instances. Students will be introduced to basic travel demand models (in particular, the four step model), with attention to the development of trip generation, trip distribution, mode choice and traffic assignment models. They will additionally be introduced to more advanced agent and activity based models. They will gain an understanding of the core data needs for the development of these models, along with their mathematical underpinnings. Particular attention will be given to the incorporation of new and emerging sources of data generated through intelligent mobility technologies.
Students will be introduced to the use of transport modelling and simulation software, and will use this to produce a realistic traffic engineering project over the course of the term.

As part of the process of building a full transport model over the course of the class, students will be required to submit a short mode choice and route assignment model, with a description of how it was generated. Written feedback will be provided on the assignment and on a standard feedback sheet with reference to CGS descriptors as appropriate. |
