Course Description

The aims of this course are to:

  • Enhance student experience
  • Provide students with an authentic learning opportunity
  • Enhance student employability
  • Enable students to acquire professional knowledge and understanding of the daily work, strategic priorities, objectives and functions of a health and/or development sector organisation
  • Facilitate student application of academic skills in a work environment
  • Provide students with opportunities to strategically develop a range of transferable skills, as well as our Graduate Attributes (www.abdn.ac.uk/graduateattributes/)

This is a project-based course, the content and structure of which is largely student-directed. Students will contribute work activities for your host organisation (16-20 hours per week over ten weeks = 160-200 hours) and teaching and learning for this course will also involve a combination of host organisation and University-facilitated structured education (22 hours through 11 compulsory two-hour University personal reflection and professional development training sessions, plus work-related training and meetings with your placement host and course staff (8 hours), with the remaining hours devoted to self-study and preparation for assessments (totalling 70-110 hours).

A placement allocations process will take place during the January – April sub session (over academic weeks 26-40). It may involve meetings with the course staff, discussions with placement hosts (potentially including filling out surveys, submitting expressions of interest; CV sharing; informal interviews (where required) and appointment confirmation) ahead of the course start date.

Some placements will be group-based, but each student will be assigned individual roles and assessments will be completed individually.
