Course Description

This course examines the interconnection between different forms of energy, the fundamental thermodynamics which limits the efficiency of energy conversion, device design limitations and the different ways in which energy might be stored

The syllabus is the following:

Lectures 1 and 2: First and second laws of thermodynamics. Lecture 3: Vapour power plants and cycle efficiency. Lecture 4: Source efficiency. Combustion. Lectures 5 to 6: Fuel cells. Lectures 7 to 8: Energy conversion. Biomass. Lectures 9 and 10: Energy supply and demand, the options. Lectures 11 to 18: Hydrogen. Physical and Chemical storage. Generation from fossil and renewable sources. Application as a fuel. Lectures 19 to 22: Mechanical, electrochemical and electrical storage. Lecture 23: Thermal storage.
