Course Overview

This course serves as an introduction to the employment relationship.  Students will learn the history of the field and how different employment relationships are established in different institutional, legal and national contexts.  The focus will be on the interactions of workers and employers and the factors that shape that relationship.

Course Description

Four key areas will be covered in the module:  1) the history of different types of employment relationships; 2) how the employment relationship can be modelled; 3) the importance of different forms of worker representation in the employment relationship (e.g. collective bargaining) and 4) comparing forms of employment relationships across countries.  These key topics will form the basis to discuss other aspects of the employment relationship, such as the legal frameworks that govern the employment relationship, different types of work systems, how the economy affects the relationship, etc.
