EV5514: REMEDIATION TECHNOLOGY FOR GEOSCIENCES (2022-2023)

Last modified: 31 Jul 2023 11:19

Course Overview

Hydrocarbon contamination of land and water has developed into a major issue in the recent decades. This course provides the technical working knowledge of hydrocarbon behaviour in different environments, and develops understanding of corresponding management and mitigation approaches with specific reference to the Oil and Gas industry. While the lectures afford sound theoretical basis, the practical classes and workshops offer hands on experience in environmental modelling. Particular attention is paid to hydrocarbon behaviour at sea and responses to marine oil spills.

Course Description

Hydrocarbon Risk Assessment and Remediation aims to develop the concepts of quantitative environmental risk assessment through empirical science. The course will allow you to gain an understanding of how to sample, analyse and interpret sites from the aspect of hydrocarbon contamination. You will develop skills in the communication of risk and hazard in the context of contaminated environments and truth test robustness of assessment tools. To understand the importance of economic drivers in hydrocarbon remediation a range of case studies will show case a selection of remediation techniques deployed in the terrestrial environments, as well as the preparedness of the Oil and Gas sector for potential marine oil spills.
