Course Description

The Individual Research Project in Higher Education course provides you with the opportunity to plan and execute a piece of independent, original research in an area of your own choosing that relates to teaching and / or supporting learning in higher education. This could be an area of personal interest or a strategic area for development identified within your academic School or Discipline.

You will be supported along the way by an experienced supervisor, along with a suite of development sessions that address the key points of undertaking research in what, for many, will be a new academic discipline. Sessions run throughout the duration of the course, with an emphasis at the outset on helping you to understand and select appropriate approaches and methods in order to address the research question that you have devised, before moving on to more diverse topics such as how to build and enhance your teaching profile.

In addition, regular catchup / check-in sessions with the rest of the class will enable you to present short snapshots of your work as it unfolds in order to ask questions of and receive further feedback from your colleagues and the course supervisors, helping you to refine and shape your research in a formative, supportive environment. Course materials, including pre-session learning activities and online delivery utilise the University’s virtual learning environment, MyAberdeen.

Sessions (delivered online):
1. Research paradigms explored
2. Planning your project
3. Getting your work noticed: profile building and publication in Education
4. Progress report and check-in

Your successfully completed research project forms the artifact for assessment. Along with established criteria for assessment, you will be invited to create, through discussion and agreement with your supervisor, one assessment criterion of your own that will personalise and contextualise the completed research project.

This course is aligned with the UK Professional Standards Framework for Teaching & Supporting Learning in H.E.  Successful completion of this course as part of the wider PG Certificate in H.E. Learning & Teaching programme will enable you to become recognised as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA, now part of AdvanceHE).
