Course Overview

This course will empower students to engage proactively with the complex social and political concepts, theories and perspectives around equality, equity and social justice. 

 The first part of the course will develop a knowledge and understanding of the range of terminology, concepts, theories, and perspectives connected with this area of study, using the 2010 Equality Act as an overarching framework. This will be undertaken through the study of relevant academic literature and participatory activities.  

The second part of the course will demonstrate how these concepts, theories and perspectives can be applied to the student’s understanding of their individual musical practice(s).

Course Description

The student experience is built around a participatory approach to learning and teaching, incorporating Contact time with lecturers (lectures, seminars and workshops), self-direct study and practical vocational experiences.

Throughout the course students will be asked to undertake a variety of formative tasks including: self-directed research, reading and writing, as well as practical activities and online collaborations.

This Coursework assessment provides freedom of choice for each student dependent on their distinctive musical practice (composer, performer, musicologist, teacher, community musician). There will be a range of options available: composition portfolio, performance, essay, presentation, workshop. Parameters will be set for each of the five options to ensure parity in assessment load/requirement and marking. A range of second markers will be used to ensure fairness in the marking process.
Additional detail on assessment parameters is as follows:
Composition: 12 - 14 minutes, 1500 word reflective narrative
Performance: 15 - 17 minutes, 1000 reflective narrative
Essay: 6000 words
Presentation: 50 minutes
Workshop: minimum 2 hrs engagement, lesson plan, and 1500 word reflective narrative
Or a combination of the above in consultation with the Course Coordinator
