Course Description

This course provides a sequence of seminars during the two half-sessions. Each seminar is designed to provide a wide range of substantive learning experiences and opportunities to gain practical research skills. During the course, students will continue to build their PhD dissertation in alignment with their research project. At the end of the second half-session, the students will be expected to present the findings of their second year of research, to explore new findings and discoveries made in that research, and to present on a chapter from their dissertation.

Expected Seminar Topics to be Potentially Covered, depending on staff availability:

  • Advanced techniques of PowerPoint / Keynote slide preparation
  • Multiple videotaped practice presentations, to enable feedback on presentation assessments
  • Multiple practice simulations in fielding research questions from conference events
  • Seminar of how to draft conference research conference proposals
  • Seminar on how to apply for research funding
  • Seminar on Social Academic Media options for collaborative research and for promoting one’s research
  • Seminars that feature faculty presenting their recent research so that PGRs have a chance to participate in Research Conference interaction with a trained researcher

The course will also feature a weekly pastoral session to check on various PGR activities and needs while they progress through the First Year PGR Program to better ensure optimal study progress and health and safety issues.
