GL5539: RESERVOIR SIMULATION (2020-2021)

Last modified: 24 Jun 2020 14:31

Course Overview

Reservoir simulation is an indispensible tool for today's reservoir engineers.  Using this approach engineers can develop better designs and processes for exploitation of subsurface resources.  This course will provide students with basic knowledge of the technologies used in the oil and gas industry for modelling complex flows in reservoirs.

Course Description

This course aims to :

  1. Introduce fundamentals of computational methods for Geoscience students
  2. Build a sound understanding of mathematical models, how they are connected with physical models, and how they behave differently
  3. Give a brief review of governing equations for fluid flow and rock mechanics
  4. Show students how partial differential equations governing a physical phenomenon are solved
  5. Discuss important aspects of a numerical simulation including stability, convergence, accuracy, and computational cost
  6. Give an overview on how to benchmark numerical solutions, how to validate models, and how to verify algorithms and computer programs
  7. Provide students with an opportunity to devise their own models and solve them numerically
