Course Overview

This course will provide the students with a ‘hands on’ experience in conducting a project for three months, in a Public Health context.  This project will address a particular Public Health issue and is designed to develop the core competence in identifying and handling Public Health questions and their answers by the methods of enquiry and analysis relevant to the full range of health services and public health activities

Course Description

During the time of conducting the Public Health projects, students will be placed within a variety of settings such as an academic unit, or within other work-based placements such as the local Health Board/authority, voluntary sector, hospital or community-based clinical setting etc.

Student will work closely with two experts; one in the subject/topic area and the other in methodology. Students will develop a proposal/protocol, collect data/information, analyse and interpret the findings. Students will experience the application of the knowledge and skills in health care investigation, in a Public Health context.

Summative Assessments

Lead supervisor report (10%); professional public health report (6000 words) or Academic publication manuscript (3000 words excluding tables, appendices and references) 70%); poster presentation (10%); protocol presentation (10%).
