LS552M: CORE SKILLS FOR RESEARCH STUDENTS (2019-2020)

Last modified: 25 Sep 2019 09:58

Course Overview

This compulsory course for all post-graduate research students takes students through a series of interactive workshops and guest presentations during their first semester to hone some of the core skills required to excel in post-graduate research work. Near the completion of the first full year of post-graduate research work, PhD students present their work at a conference to which research staff and students within the College of Arts and Social Sciences are invited. PhD Students then submit a capstone paper to be assessed as a part of the course assessment and of the progression process within the programme.

Course Description

This course engages Law Post-Graduate Research students with some overarching critical thinking and analytical tools which would inform the research, the research methodology, the structure, and the overall composition and specific write-up of their research projects. These tools would be developed and honed through series of class assignments, workshops, and class discussions. Students would be taken through the process of the derivation of thesis statements, working through literature review, the writing of abstracts, and (for PhD students) an initial write-up of a portion of their research project and a short presentation.
