This course introduces students to the methods and processes for evaluating and communicating petroleum industry geological and geographical data in order to assist with planning and decision-making, through the use of Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA), geo-visualisation tools and techniques, simulation and models, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).

The aims of this course are: (a) introduce students to the fundamentals of preparing, visualising, analysing, interpreting, and communicating geographical, geological, offshore survey, and geophysical data, specifically through the use of Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA), geo-visualisation tools and techniques, simulation and models, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS); (b) to consider the data into information pathway as the basis for planning and informed decision-making in the Oil and Gas industry; and (c) to identify effective ways for the visual communication of geographical and geological information.
This will include coverage of the following: graphic and cartographic representation of spatial data, choosing the correct technique for data representation, 2D and 3D visualisations, interactive and dynamic visualisation of data, immersive tools and techniques, and the consideration of novel ways to represent and communicate data and information resulting from data analyses, simulations, and models to a wide range of end-users. Examples will be drawn from GIS analyses, seismic interpretation, geological models and simulations, and well and reservoir data. Terrestrial, coastal/marine, offshore survey, and geophysical datasets will be used to illustrate including: remote sensing data (including UAVs), geographical and hydrographic data, gravity, magnetic and seismic data. Finally, some consideration will be given to devising appropriate geo-visualisations for effective communication.
