Course Overview

Hydrocarbon contamination of land and water has developed into a major issues in the recent decades. This course will allow students to utilise risk assessment models to predict the risk that contaminated site have on both humans and the environment. You will explore how remediation techniques can be used to remediate sites that have recently been contaminated and those that have a long history of contamination.

Course Description

Hydrocarbon Risk Assessment and Remediation aims to develop the concepts of quantitative environmental risk assessment through empirical science. To allow students to gain an understanding in how to sample, analyse and interpret sites from the aspect of contamination. To develop skills in the communication of risk and hazard in the context of contaminated lands and waters. To truth test remediation strategies and understand the engineering requirements to develop and apply them to the field. To understand the importance of economic drivers in environmental remediation.

Summative Assessments

Technical report (50%); Written report (50%).

Resit: similar to 1st attempt, with continuous assessment mark(s) carried forward with an opportunity to resit the component that was failed in the first attempt.

Formative Assessment

Formative feedback is provided during discussions in class, in practical sessions and tutorials. 


Each student will receive individual feedback and a mark for the assessment reports. Feedback will be provided as written comments. Students who are identified as having difficulty in successfully completing the coursework assessment tasks will be invited to meet members of the course team to identify difficulties and discuss solutions.
