Course Overview

The course studies the physical principles, technologies and systems, and effects on the environment associated with renewable energy generation from wind, marine and hydro sources. The course provides understanding of the position of these sources of energy in the current and future global energy requirements and the technical challenges in meeting the future energy demands.

The laboratory exercise is designed to reinforce many of the concepts covered in lectures. This includes experiments on the performance characteristics of a turbine.

Course Description

The course examines the renewable energy industries involving wind, hydro and marine (tidal and wave) including resources, physical principles, technologies, environmental considerations and impact, integration into the grid, commercial development, and future challenges facing the industries.

Summative Assessments

Three hour witten examination (70%)

Continuous assessment (30%).

The re-sit will comprise of re-doing the failed element/s (exam and/or coursework assessment/s) from the 1st attempt with a maximum CGS mark of D3. The marks for other elements (successfully passed) will be carried over. Resit mark of either RP or RF will be recorded.
