Course Overview

This course covers a range of conceptual issues fundamental to an understanding of autism in inclusive contexts. Participants will therefore develop a critical knowledge and understanding of policy, literature and research relating to the diagnostic criteria for autism, the key theories of autism, the main strategies used to support learners and the key themes and issues in the field. This will be linked to a critical knowledge and understanding of policy, literature and research on inclusion and issues around its meaning and enactment. The role of interprofessional collaboration and learner participation in facilitating inclusion is emphasised across the course.

Course Description

This course aims to deepen participant knowledge and understanding of the key conceptual ideas, theories and perspectives in autism, and the issues associated with autism and learning in inclusive contexts.

Topics will include: - The Inclusive Context
                               - Collaborative Working
                               - Perceptions and Myths
                               - Definitions 
                               - History
                               - Prevalence and Diagnostic Criteria  
                               - The Triad of Impairments
                               - The Causes of Autism
                               - Psychological and Affective Theories of Autism

Further Information & Notes

Course participants must have a commitment to the inclusion of learners with autism spectrum disorders and have access to an appropriate setting for the purpose of undertaking the assessment task and gaining practical experience.

·         This is an interprofessional course for practitioners from Education, Health, Social Care and the Voluntary Sector.

·         This is a ‘specialist’ course so all participants must have some knowledge and understanding of autism in order to undertake the courses

·         All participants must have access to a workplace for the purposes of the assignments which are all workplace-based.

·         All courses are ‘face-to-face’ delivery

·         Course 1 is ‘core’ i.e. it must be completed before any of the other courses can be undertaken

·         Course 3 can only be undertaken after completion of courses 1 and 2.

Summative Assessments

Formative assessment is an ongoing feature of the course and will take place through discussion, group activities, and individual reflective and evaluative activities. Participants will also be asked to keep a Professional Diary. Summative assessment will take the form of one 6000 word assignment (written or mixed media) focused directly on workplace applications. There will be one opportunity to re-submit assignments that have been revised to take account of tutor feedback.
