Course Overview

This course will equip students with the skills and information needed to appraise and undertake research in a professional manner. You will acquire the skills and information needed to: formulate a general aim and specific research questions and objectives; design a study; writing a research proposal, collect and manage data and critically appraise the data in the context of other relevant research and present the findings of a scientific study. In addition students will develop their knowledge of the standards, requirements and professionalism required to conduct high quality rigorous research.

Course Description

The aim of this course is to equip you with the knowledge and skills to

  • Undertake scientific dissemination for a range of audiences ( academic, media,  public)
  • To conduct a critical appraisal of research and demonstrate an appreciation of the issues that are important in assessing the methodological quality and ethical rigour of research studies and be able to apply these.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of professional practice, research ethics,  governance and organisation
  • Undertake the design of a health-related research proposal including
    • Develop a basic understanding  of the underlying principles of quantitative and qualitative research
    • introducing students to the key data generation methods in health-related research
    • an understanding of working with secondary data, linked data, healthcare records and large dataset
    • An overview of a range of quantitative and qualitative approaches to analysis
    • enabling students to choose the most appropriate research design and data collection tools to address a particular research question
    • Identifying potential sources of bias in research and develop strategies to minimise these.
  • Produce a research proposal suitable for submission to a research funding body

Formative Assessment

MCQ self test can be taken multiple time but must achieve >70% by end of course; Weekly MCQ 10-20 questions


Feedback on all assessments will be provided with 14 days of submission for all assignments, and in many cases will be instantaneous. Feedback will come in various forms including detailed information about correct answers for quiz responses. For more extensive pieces feedback will take the form of either written or audio recorded feedback and will always provide information on areas that the you need to focus on to improve your understanding
