Course Description

This course builds on the content covered in LN5023 Theories of Learning. It focuses on the processes that are involved in the learning of second language vocabulary, morphosyntax, collocations, formulaic language, language functions and phonology. In addition to critical analysis of theory and research, students will have an opportunity to engage in designing EFL (English as a Foreign/Second Language) classroom activities that address areas of difficulty for English language learners from different linguistic backgrounds. The role of errors in SLA (Second Language Acquisition) will also be reviewed, and students will have an opportunity to reflect on EFL classroom activities that encourage language learners to notice and correct their own errors.

Intended learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • understand processes involved in the learning of vocabulary, morphosyntax, collocations, formulaic language, language functions and phonology in L2 (second language)
  • critically analyse research on the acquisition of L2 vocabulary, morphosyntax, collocations, formulaic language, language functions and phonology,
  • evaluate the role of errors in the process of SLA (Second Language Acquisition) from a range of theoretical perspectives,
  • reflect on EFL classroom activities that encourage language learners to correct their own errors,
  • design EFL classroom activities that address specific areas of difficulty that learners from different linguistic backgrounds might experience,
