Course Overview

This course covers electronic instrumentation used for physiological measurements in the hospital environment.  Students will gain in-depth understanding of technological and physiological processes in medical devices, and of the need for medical equipment management, including quality assurance, maintenance and safety testing. Students will also gain experience of designing, constructing and testing electronic circuits for physiological measurement.

Course Description

Physiological Measurement: Physiological transducers (including blood and gas analysers). Effects of EM fields on the body.  Reduction of interference on physiological signals.  Basic digital signal processing (DSP). Optoelectronics and its medical applications.  Pulse Oximetry.  Biomagnetism.  Electrical stimulation for diagnosis and therapy.  Lung function testing. Renal dialysis.

Design of Medical Instrumentation: Operational amplifiers and Active Filters.  Analogue multipliers.  Phase-sensitive detectors (PSD) for modulation and demodulation. Isolation amplifiers.  Noise and low-noise amplifiers.  Feedback systems.  Front-end amplifiers. Grounding and shielding.  Digital and microprocessor hardware and memories.  Interface devices.  Analogue-to-digital converters (ADCs).  Serial bus, interfacing standards and sensor networks.  Renal dialysis equipment. Telemetry of physiological signals.  Radiofrequency techniques and applications. 

Equipment Management: Medical equipment planning, selection and procurement, quality assurance,  risk assessment and safety testing.
