SS5806: LAND USE AND THE CHANGING ENVIRONMENT ON DEESIDE (2016-2017)

Course Overview

An introduction to landscape and associated conflicts by using the Cairngorm National Park as the setting. Visits to sporting estates, forests (plantation and semi-natural), farms, river management, ski centres and national nature reserves are used to exemplify the complex relationships between semi-natural and management environments and the people that occupy and use them.

Course Description

The course considers not just the current and past land-uses on Deeside but also places this in the context of future changes as a consequence of environmental changes and economics. The course also addresses the impact of the National Park in local, national and international context.

Summative Assessments

There are two assessments for this course. The first is a numerical mapping exercise on land capability (25%) and the second assessment is an essay (75%).
