Course Overview

This course offers you a grounding in research within contemporary nursing, midwifery and health care, with a specific focus on qualitative research. Initially you will consider the development of research and related audit/service evaluation activities. You will also have opportunities to develop your skills of literature searching and critiquing research.  You will then be introduced to key qualitative approaches, methods to generate, handle and analyse qualitative data and the importance of rigour, quality and ethics.  During the course you will gain insight into the practicalities of undertaking qualitative research via practical workshop activities, facilitated by experienced researchers.

Course Description

Introduction to research and related audit/service evaluation activities in health.
History and development of research and related audit/service evaluation activities within nursing, midwifery and health.
Introduction to qualitative paradigms.
Qualitative methodologies (e.g. ethnography, phenomenology, action research, narrative enquiry etc).
Qualitative methods for data collection and analysis (e.g. interviews, focus groups, observation, framework analysis, grounded theory).
Sampling.
Rigour and quality.
Ethical challenges.
Writing and effective communication of research findings.
