Course Overview

Students complete the course with an enhanced ability to present convincing academic arguments and research findings in writing and, particularly orally. They improve their critical engagement with the research and arguments of other historians.
Students attend research seminars and write a seminar comparison report, fostering engagement with the process of presenting arguments and research findings.
Following training in presentation skills, students present their dissertation proposals in a workshop, recording their presentation using Camtasia, and respond to questions from staff and students. Students then write a reflective analysis of their presentations. Download course guide

Course Description

Students will attend the departmental research seminars and write a seminar comparison essay, fostering engagement with the process of presenting arguments and research findings.

Following a seminar on presentation skills, students will present their dissertation proposals in a workshop and respond to questions from staff and fellow students. These presentations will be recorded using Camtasia and students will write a reflective essay on their presentation. Students will receive marks and feedback for their presentations and responses to questions and for their essays.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt:

1 x 1,500 word seminar comparison report (30%)

1 x oral presentation (40%)

1 x 1,500 word reflective analysis (30%)

Resit: 1 x 3,000 word essay or viva voce examination as appropriate (100%)
