This is a core corse in HS1 in the MSc TESOL programme. It will give students a grounding in qualitative, quantitative and mixed research methods in TESOL, which will be relevant for many of the areas on which students may focus in their focussed portfolio in the summer.

The course focuses on a range of approaches to data collection and analysis including qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods. It provides an introduction to the theory and practice of qualitative and quantitative research in TESOL. It enables students to develop an understanding of the philosophical frameworks on which research is based, It also facilitates students' acquisition of practical research skills which are applicable in a range of different fields. It focuses on those research methods that are frequently used in TESOL research and that are appropriate for postgraduate research. Quantitative research methods are introduced in conjunction with training in how to use a statistical package (SPSS) to analyse data. This course also enables students to develop a deeper understanding of TESOL-related research and areas of debate. It encourages students to engage in critical reflection on their own intuitions about what effective language learning and teaching entails.
The course will cover the following areas:
· the philosophical frameworks underpinning different research approaches,
· effective strategies for reading research papers in order to carry out a literature review,
· strategies for the design and conduct of research projects, including framing research questions that can be tested,
· ethical constraints and considerations in TESOL research,
· qualitative, quantitative and mixed approaches to data collection and analysis.
We will work with examples of published research articles and data sets to illustrate various aspect of research.
