ED50FG: A COUNSELLING APPROACH IN EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS (E-LEARNING) (2014-2015)

Course Overview

This is a 15 credit module which is only available to those who have not completed the Mentoring in Professional Contexts or Counselling and Mentoring Approaches in Professional Settings and require a 15 credit module to complete their programme of study. The module raises awareness of person centred counselling approaches where active listening skills and Roger’s core conditions are embedded into the everyday work of helpers of young people, particularly in classrooms. The Egan goal centred model will also be investigated and solution focused behavioural techniques discussed.

Course Description

  • analysis of the core theory and practice of holistic and person-centred approaches; 
  • comparing and contrasting such approaches with current practice and critically appraising the applicability of these approaches within the contexts of
  • guidance/pastoral care and learning and teaching; 
  • analysis and development of the ‘core facilitative conditions’ associated with a person-centred approach to counselling; 
  • clarification of attitudes and values; 
  • the development of essential counselling skills including active listening, paraphrasing, reflection of feeling, focussing, structuring, facilitative
  • challenging, goal setting and assisting action; 
  • structured models of the helping process; 
  • child protection, confidentiality and ethical issues.
