This module adds to traditional notions of energy transition sustainability to include labour markets and health. It investigates how the energy transition will impact labour markets and the public health of developed countries. The module also examines other factors that impact the sustainability of good labour market and public health, such as the environment and technological change.

Although often used in the context of energy transition, the concept of ‘sustainability’ is a broad one as seen through the designation of the UK Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While a number of the SDGs reference dimensions of energy transition and the environment directly, a number also examine sustainability along labour market and health outcomes – such as SDGs 1 (No Poverty), 3 (Good Health and Well-being), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and 10 (Reduced Inequalities). This module concerns these key elements of sustainability by investigating the sustainability challenges in labour markets and public health.
This module starts by examining the intersection of environmental change, public health, and policy. Students explore how climate change and environmental degradation impact health, analyse the role of public policies in mitigating risks, and evaluate adaptation strategies to enhance resilience. Then the focus turns to how the energy transition interacts with sustainability in labour markets, examining the role of energy production (both in traditional and renewable forms) on labour market outcomes such as wages and employment as well as skills development. The module ends by considering sustainability broadly and examining how the changing nature of work (e.g. through technology and Artificial Intelligence as well as increased precarity) impacts labour markets as well as health.
