Course Overview

This course offers a comprehensive study of the principles and application of economics in sustainable resource management. It covers theory and practices concerning extraction, management and conservation of renewable resources (e.g., forests, fisheries) and exhaustible, non-renewable resources (e.g., minerals). Students explore topics such as resource pricing, environmental impacts, and policy frameworks to develop sustainable resource management strategies for addressing global challenges.

Course Description

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the economics of sustainable resource management, focusing on the efficient and equitable use of both renewable and non-renewable natural resources. It explores how economic theory and policy can inform the management, conservation, and allocation of key resources such as forests, fisheries, minerals, and energy. Students will examine the trade-offs between economic development and environmental sustainability, with attention to resource pricing, market failures, externalities, and governance frameworks at local and global scales. The course emphasises critical engagement with real-world policy challenges, equipping students with the analytical tools needed to design and evaluate sustainable resource management strategies that support long-term social, economic, and environmental goals.
