Course Overview

This course introduces interdisciplinary perspectives on cinema and comics from a wide range of cultural contexts, particularly focused on how they relate to popular cultures. The course allows students to examine these visual media from a theoretical and critical perspective, applied to the study of specific cultural case studies and contexts.

Course Description

This course introduces different media that play a key role in theorizing the relationship between cinema, comics and popular culture. Case studies will typically include, but are not limited to: Almodóvar and the Spanish Movida, French new wave, bande dessinée and Manga.

The course allows students to develop theoretical and critical skills, applied within transnational frameworks. Students will study both theoretical texts and cultural representations and will be able to pursue further research on specific texts and topics.

Participation will be marked according to the engagement they demonstrate with course materials, as well as timely posting of entries. Six entries is the minimum for full marks, and at least four entries must be completed to pass the course.
