Beginning in the sixth century, when Columba arrived on Iona, this course will trace the history of Christianity in Scotland through four distinct periods. During the first Middle Ages era, the work of the first missionaries, the rise of Gaelic Christianity and the Medieval Period of the church in Scotland will be explored. In the Early Modern Period, the significant events of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, including the Scottish Reformation, the National Covenant and the Westminster Assembly will be examined. The Modern Period section of the course will cover the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Religious schisms and the Disruption, the rise of Evangelicalism and the Scottish Revival tradition will feature in this part of the module. In the final Late Modern Period, attention will turn to religion and society in the twentieth century, the Billy Graham crusade and the changing religious landscape of twenty first century Scotland.
