Course Description

This course will take you through all the stages of successfully conducting a small-scale ethnographic research project. With the support of a supervisor, you will select a topic relevant to you that can be explored with ethnographic methods and develop a research proposal on it. You will then apply for ethical approval and, once granted, carry out the research. You will gain skills in research design and practical experience in applying ethnographic research methods. In writing up your project, you will learn how to analyse ethnographic data and write up your research in an appropriate style, taking into account your theoretical framing and your intended audience.

Through a combination of recorded lectures and supervision meetings, we will cover specific topics including creating a research proposal, learning from previous research, analysing qualitative data, and writing up your results. Week by week, teaching materials will open up new perspectives on doing research and give you the confidence to become a successful ethnographic researcher.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Develop and communicate your own original ideas for ethnographic research
  • Apply for ethical approval for your research
  • Use the techniques of ethnography to carry out your research project
  • Analyse ethnographic data that you have gathered
  • Write up your research into a professional ethnographic report, taking into account your theoretical framing and intended audience.

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 30 August 2024 for 1st term courses and 20 December 2024 for 2nd term courses.
