EG30G3: WORK-BASED LEARNING 1 (2022-2023)

Last modified: 31 Jul 2023 11:19

Course Overview

This course is one of three Work Based Learning courses which make up 60 credits of the level 3 programme in the Graduate Apprenticeship in BEng in Civil Engineering, and is only available to students on that programme.

Taken together, the three courses aim to deliver a wide range of learning outcomes derived from the student’s professional practice, but the order of the topics is not prescribed. This means that although this is the first of the three WBL courses, the topics delivered do not need to be the first in the list of topics, but could be the second or third in the list.

However the topics are ordered between the three courses, all of the topics must have been achieved by the conclusion of the series of courses.

It should be noted that the three courses account for 25 credits, 25 credits and 10 credits, respectively, and this deliberately allows Employers to adjust the priority given to the three broad headings for the learning outcomes (given below), in a manner which takes into account their type of business.

Course Description

This course is a 25 credit course running over the first half session. Which of the learning outcomes are to be the focus of this course, and how they are to achieved and assessed will be agreed with the student and the Employer prior to the beginning of the course.

The topics to be chosen are grouped as follows:

  1. Surveying and Drawing
  2. Design
  3. Management

As well as Work Based Learning there will be six fortnightly scheduled online tutorial sessions with the University tutor to discuss the progress of the intended outcomes and the progress towards the submission of work for assessment.

The course will be assessed by both a submitted report at its conclusion, and by Oral Examination, both of whose aims and assessment deliverables will be agreed prior to the commencement of the course. The Oral Examination will require the student to deliver online (via a live session on Collaborate Ultra on MyAberdeen) a PowerPoint presentation about the project, on which they will be interviewed.

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 31 August 2023 for 1st half-session courses and 22 December 2023 for 2nd half-session courses.
