Course Description

In light of COVID-19, many museums have increased the rate at which they provided online resources; online collections, 360 degree tours and more. This brings into the open broader questions about accessibility, care of information, and data usage, which are key to museum practice. We need to note, however, that digital and computing technology have been impacting museum practice for almost 60 years, through documentation and collections management resources. With the rise in digital technologies as everyday items since the late 1980s, it is becoming increasingly urgent that museum practitioners also address the practical and philosophical questions of preserving and caring for artefacts of the Digital Age. However, recently released reports from the One by One project highlight a skills/confidence gap in the sector in relation to digital technology. These factors suggest the necessity of making training in digital confidence, resilience and skills more available to museum practitioners. For students, this course will offer the opportunity to explore this complex field, will encourage the development of ‘digital confidence’, offer an alternative mode of engagement with a PG level education, and offer opportunities for professional development.

Key topics on the course include:

  • Digital Confidence
  • The History of Museum Computing
  • Digital Policy and Discourse
  • Digital Design
  • Display Technologies
  • Digital Ethics
  • Social Justice and Digital
  • Digital Objects
  • Digital Maturity and Post-Digitality

Your course will include lectures, readings, journal reflections and discussions. There will be regular ‘Tech of the Week’ topics for you to explore. You will complete a presentation focused on a digital intervention at the University of Aberdeen’s Museums and Special Collections, and you will complete an independent critical evaluation of the digital offer of a museum of your choice.

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 31 August 2023 for 1st half-session courses and 22 December 2023 for 2nd half-session courses.
