ZO5513: APPLIED MARINE ECOLOGY & ECOSYSTEM MANAGEMENT (2019-2020)

Last modified: 25 Sep 2019 09:58

Course Overview

Decommissioning sciences requires students to have a competent and realistic understanding of both marine ecologic and the wider marine ecosystem. This course allows the impact of perturbations associated with offshore activities to be related to biological responses. This will be done using detailed relevant case studies and engagement with regulators.

Course Description

Using the North Sea as a case study the course provides essential knowledge about physical and chemical oceanography. The components of a marine food web, from phytoplankton to top predators, are described emphasising variability in structure and functioning. Basic ecosystem properties such as diversity will be highlighted. Policies relevant to the management of the North Sea ecosystem are illustrated with reference to topical issues such as fishing and pollution. Stakeholder engagement in management of marine ecosystems will be reviewed. The course concludes with an in-depth review of two recently published documents: a European-level framework for evaluating the overall status of marine ecosystems and a description of environmental baselines included as part of an environmental impact assessment for a decommissioning project in the North Sea. Course content will be delivered by marine ecologists, industry consultants and government scientists working in applied marine management. It does not assume any prior knowledge of marine ecology and ecosystems. Students already having a background in biology will benefit from the material on policy, management and stakeholder engagement.
