Course Description

As part of developing a rich understanding of current views of mental health, this module will highlight the relevance of the historical context in which our current perspectives of mental health have emerged. Group exercises will enable students to explore and evaluate the influence of stigma alongside debates about the process of classification and diagnosis of mental health presentations. Students will consider how a range of mental health models can be evaluated and applied in specific contexts. Varied learning approaches will facilitate recognition of the complexity of the impact of mental health problems at an individual, employment, social and global level. Case examples will be critiqued to develop understanding of the challenges of delivering services to support mental health and wellbeing. Individual and group learning exercises will enable a fuller understanding of this area.
