Course Description

Plants are used by humans for food, clothing, medicine, cosmetics, ornaments, symbols, among other purposes. Besides their vital role in our world, they are understood as a mere commodity, and they are uncommon or non-central characters in narratives. In this course, plants will be place at the centre and in relation to other species.

This course aims to acquaint students with the tools of close reading analysis, taking into consideration critical plant theory and the historical context surrounding these texts. We will focus on specific authors and plants from these texts: corn plant, juniper tree, asphodel, coffee plant, among others. By the end of the course, students should be able to elaborate knowledgeable analysis of the texts we study, taking into account biocentric close readings as well as the social-historical contexts of the plants studied.
