Course Description

This course focusses on solo performance alongside the development of core classroom performance skills including keyboard skills, vocal and classroom instrument skills (drum-kit, guitar/bass guitar and tuned percussion).

Students will receive 2hrs per week of group tuition divided equally between keyboard skills and vocal and classroom instrument skills. These are core skills required by the General Teaching Council Scotland (GTCS). The group sessions will focus on the development of individual skill as well as preparing you to use and teach these skills in classroom settings.

Additional lectures focus on a research-led approach to musical performance, including ideas around performance practice & interpretation, style & genre, practice regimes, managing performance anxiety, presentation and stagecraft. Students will also take part in discussions around their future career goals in musical performance. Students will be given opportunities to perform during performance lectures, receiving feedback from their peers and teaching staff, and honing their abilities to critique and evaluate performances.

Students will attend tutorial session (2 in 1HS, 1 in 2HS), discussing issues related to their own performing, selecting programmes, and reflecting on career goals in music performance.

Students will be required to attend at least 2 two-hour performance workshops per semester, and it is strongly recommended that students sign up for a performance at least once per turn.

Students will be expected to attend at least 8 performances as part of the university concert series, to join and attend rehearsals with at least one university (or external) instrumental ensemble or choir.
