Course Overview

The course will be built around three areas of study:

- The history and development of Conducting
- Development of core conducting skills (gesture, vocabulary, score preparation, rehearsal planning and performance)  
- Development of knowledge and understanding of Conducting as a vocation (The business)

The course content will be delivered through workshops that will engage students in academic reading and writing, practical skill building and research skills.

Course Description

Course Aims

This course is designed to develop a practical and academic knowledge and understanding of the skills required to engage with conducting as a discipline by providing:

- critical engagement with key texts in the subject 
- an introduction to the practical skills (gesture, vocabulary, score preparation, rehearsal planning and performance) required to rehearse and perform with a broad range of ensembles
- an introduction to researching appropriate repertoire
- an overview of the vocational requirements of a conductor

Main Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will:

- have gained and demonstrated  the necessary academic knowledge and practical skills required to engage as a conductor
- have begun to develop an awareness of repertoire available for a broad range of instrumental and vocal ensembles and how to assess it suitability
- be able to plan and implement an effective rehearsal (having had the opportunity to do so)
- have an awareness of the key literature in the field and how to use it
