Course Overview

This course will explore how the various approaches, methods and techniques for teaching English have evolved in relation to theories about language, learning and language acquisition. We will look at some of the practical implications of this as well as discuss some of the issues and debates relating to TESOL methodology. The course will consist of lectures, seminars, demonstration lessons and practical tasks.

Course Description

This course will explore how the various approaches, methods and techniques for teaching English have evolved in relation to theories about language, learning and language acquisition. Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  •       develop an understanding of the main pedagogical approaches found in TESOL
  •       develop an understanding of the theoretical and conceptual underpinning of those approaches
  •       critically evaluate pedagogical approaches in relation to contextual factors
  •       develop understandings of some of the areas of debate relating to teaching and learning languages
  •       apply concepts and theories to experiences and practices as learners/teachers
