GG5559: UAV REMOTE SENSING, MONITORING AND MAPPING (2022-2023)

Last modified: 31 Jul 2023 11:19

Course Overview

This module will provide students with an introduction to UAV, airborne and satellite remote sensing, digital image processing, and softcopy photogrammetry to extract environmental data and information from digital imagery, and a number of monitoring and mapping applications. Students will learn how to acquire UAV imagery, and to process it into information as part of a group practical mapping exercise.

Course Description

This module will introduce students to the theory and practice of UAV, airborne and satellite remote sensing platforms and sensors, set within the context of softcopy photogrammetry, digital image processing, and a range of environmental applications. Students will be introduced briefly to the history of remote sensing, the wide variety of remote sensing platforms and sensors now available and in use, and some of the wide-ranging environmental applications. The evolution of UAVs as low-cost remote sensing platforms will also be introduced for the practical collection of photographic and video data. An introduction to soft-copy photogrammetry and digital image processing tools and techniques using industry-standard software (e.g. Erdas Imagine, ERMapper, AgiSoft, and AirphotoSE) will be provided with an emphasis on acquiring an understanding of how to extract data and information from imagery and the creation of various end products such as mosaics, 3D models and maps for visualisation and communication, and for inclusion within a Geographical Information System (GIS).
