Course Description

The course aims to develop in students a high level of both receptive (reading and listening) and productive (writing and speaking) skills in French.

Teaching falls into three broad areas that complement each other and contribute to the students’ overall command of the French language. There are three weekly classes. One class led by a native French speaker focuses on oral communicative skills. Hour A develops competence in the written language at a formal level as well as in the practical applications of language, developing both written and spoken competence in a variety of registers. The Grammar Hour aims at furthering the students' practical understanding of grammar.

Exercises are designed to improve students' comprehension of both the spoken and written language, as well as increase their sensitivity to linguistic variety. Traditional kinds of written exercise introduced and practiced at levels 1 and 2 (translation from and into French, report writing in French) will be continued in order to build upon and extend the skills already developed by presenting more challenging translation passages with greater variety of lexis, syntactical patterns, style and register and by increasing the demands posed by the report and composition in terms of length, content, sophistication of argument and expression.
