Course Overview

This course will introduce students to a variety of texts which focus on the theme of relationships between the individual and society in France from the 18th century onwards. The course will involve lectures and tutorials and will include the study of novels, a play and a film.

Course Description

The course involves the study of a range of set texts or topics, each dealing with key moments and debates in France's intellectual, political and socio-cultural history. All texts/topics are studied from the point of view of the relationship between individual and society, and will consider the question of cultural constructions of national identity in works of literature and film.
