Course Overview

To build on the introduction to safety provided in previous years and move towards developing a transcendence of knowledge regarding how the core process engineering fundamentals such as material and energy balancing, thermodynamics, heat transfer, mass transfer, fluid flow and reaction engineering underpin process safety from a systems perspective.

Course Description

The course will cover the following modules: HAZID, LOPA and ISD; Loss of Containment; Toxicology, Flammability and Dispersion; Fires and Explosions; Over Pressure Protection; Plant Layout; P&ID Development; Safety Critical Systems; Incidents that Define Process Safety.

1st Attempt: Three-hour written examination (80%) and continuous assessment (20%). Resit: Three-hour written examination (100%).
