Course Description

In 2021-2022, the theologian to be considered is John Calvin, one of the most significant and most controversial theologians of the Protestant Reformation. As the leader of the Protestant church in Geneva, he corresponded with scholars around Europe, and his influence was – and continues to be – felt around the world. This course will explore the life, context, and theology of this complex figure, providing an accessible understanding of his perspective, and creating angles for fruitful and critical appropriation of his work. Topics to be explored include the doctrine of Scripture, Christology, the doctrine of justification, and the sacraments.
