Course Overview

This course provides an introduction to computing and information technology as applied to medical physics and medical imaging, including an introduction to medical image processing techniques. Hands-on learning is provided to build confidence with computer software. The course also covers basic concepts of analogue and digital electronics and their application in a clinical setting.

Course Description

Aims:

  • To introduce students to the applications of computing in a clinical context.
  • To develop knowledge and skills in basic data management and medical image processing.
  • To provide familiarity with standard data formats, networking and security in medicine.
  • To introduce legal and safety aspects of information management in medicine.
  • To introduce the principles of computer programming in a practical environment.
  • To introduce techniques used in clinical electronics and physiological measurement.

Image and Signal Processing: sampled data and the Fourier Transform; image processing techniques; image registration; image display characteristics.

Software, Networking and Communications: PACS, DICOM and image data exchange; operating systems, networking and security; software development and software lifecycle.

Legal and Safety Aspects: computing and software safety issues; information governance; data protection legislation.

Computer Usage: Hands-on instruction and basic usage of MATLAB and standard image processing applications.

Software Development / Programming: interactive instruction in the basic concepts of computer programming, using the MATLAB language and programming environment.

Electronics: electronics for physiological measurement; clinical applications.
